A black and white image of a man in army uniform

A nice coincidence

A woman from Essex got in touch via the Waltham Forest History and Heritage Network to ask which printers we covered in the project as her father had worked at one. It just so happened that he worked at was D. Smith & Sons, which was at 97 Lea Bridge Road from the 1920s and which we have included some wonderful 1959 photos from Vestry House Museum. I showed her this one and she is 95% sure that the man at the bottom of the photo is her dad Denys Stratford, who worked at the company from 1937 and who was given a watch in 1957 for 20 years’ service. The watch isn’t visible in the photo but she thinks the pullover is similar to those his wife made for him and she also has a pair of armbands he used to wear like those in the photo. The old photo is of Denys during WW2. Denys Stratford later worked at Blades East and Blades in Shoreditch and died in 1985.
